The problem emerged after installing the KB5063878 security update and the KB5062660 preview update, with drives vanishing from the OS during heavy write tasks. Some devices recovered after a restart, while others remained inaccessible.

Reportedly affected drives include models with Phison NAND controllers, and other brands such as SanDisk, Corsair, Kioxia, and InnoGrit. Phison told BleepingComputer it is working with Microsoft to fix the issue, and said the affected controllers are under review. Microsoft has not yet publicly commented on the bug. In the meantime, users are advised to avoid writing large files in one go and to stage large extractions over time.
