Four members of the same British family were among six people killed when their car collided head on with another vehicle on the IP2 main road near Castro Verde in Portugal. The group had rented a car at Faro Airport and were travelling north from the Algarve toward Mourao in Evora district when the crash happened around 1.40am. The victims included two 20-year-old twins, their 55-year-old father and their 51-year-old mother, as well as the 19-year-old girlfriend of one of the twins. The other driver, a Portuguese man travelling alone, also died.
Local police say the GNR are investigating the circumstances. Mourao's Municipal Council announced two days of mourning starting on Sunday. Officials said the victims were from Mourao but living in Britain, with the twins born in the UK; the girlfriend is described as having Polish origins and living in the UK. The identity of the travellers in the other car has been established.
