Hand soap recalled after bacterial contamination linked to sepsis risk

DermaRite Industries is voluntary recalling nearly four dozen lots of its hand soap and lotion products after discovering contamination with Burkholderia cepacia, a bacterium that can enter the bloodstream through cuts and cause sepsis in vulnerable individuals. The affected items are DermaKleen antiseptic lotion soap, DermaSarra external analgesic, KleenFoam antimicrobial foam soap, and PeriGiene antiseptic cleanser. The products were distributed across the United States and Puerto Rico. The company has asked distributors and customers to review inventory and destroy all affected products under each facility's recall process and says no adverse events have been reported so far.

The CDC notes that B. cepacia is common in soil and water and generally poses little risk to healthy people. However, in immunocompromised individuals or those who care for them, an infection can spread more readily and become life threatening. Symptoms can range from none to serious respiratory infections, with fever and fatigue appearing as early signs. DermaRite has notified distributors and customers by email and urged facilities to follow the recall instructions and physicians to contact patients who may have used the products if symptoms emerge.

The recall highlights the ongoing vulnerability of everyday health products to contamination and the importance of rapid supplier accountability. It shows how products used in caregiving settings can pose a higher risk despite low danger to healthy consumers.
