LOS ANGELES, AP — Danielle Spencer, who brought Dee Thomas to life on the 1970s sitcom Whats Happening, has died at age 60 after a yearslong cancer fight. The show, set in Watts and running from 1976 to 1979, was among the early TV series to center Black teenagers in a working-class setting. Dee was the sharp, wry younger sister whose quips and blunt honesty helped anchor the cast. Spencer’s early life included a serious car crash in Malibu that left her in a coma for three weeks and caused lasting health issues for years.

Spencer later trained as a veterinarian, earning a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Tuskegee University in 1993 after studying at UC Davis and UCLA. She occasionally returned to acting, including a role in the 1997 film As Good as It Gets, but she dedicated much of her life to animal welfare and medicine. In recent years she faced medical challenges, including emergency surgery in 2018 related to the earlier accident and a breast cancer diagnosis in 2014 that led to a double mastectomy.
