Four years later, she underwent emergency brain surgery to remove a bleeding hematoma linked to a 1976 car crash that killed her stepfather Tim Pelt and left her in a coma for weeks.
The crash happened during the show’s second season and she spent months in physical therapy afterward. After Whats Happening ended in 1979, she and her mother briefly relocated to Africa. Nelson's tributes on Instagram described Spencer as a fighter who endured medical trials with courage and grace.
