Researchers at James Cook University have identified a new species of stick insect called Acrophylla alta in the Atherton tablelands of Queensland, Australia. Weighing around 44 grams, it is noted as the heaviest stick insect in Australia. Published in the journal Zootaxa, this discovery highlights the uniquely large size of the insect which can grow to about 40 centimeters in length. Professor Angus Emmott, who contributed to the identification, stated that while longer stick insects exist, they are typically lighter.
