Researchers in Australia have uncovered what they believe is the country's heaviest stick insect, named Acrophylla alta, found in the Wet Tropics rainforest. Measuring 40 centimeters long and weighing 44 grams, this insect's unusual eggs played a crucial role in its identification. Specimens will be preserved at the Queensland Museum for further study. The remote mountainous region of Queensland, where the species was found, has made it difficult to discover, contributing to its lack of prior recognition. Angus Emmott from James Cook University noted that the insect's size helps it adapt to the chilly canopy environment of its habitat.

The discovery of Acrophylla alta not only enhances our understanding of Australia's biodiversity but also highlights the rich ecosystems that exist in isolated environments.
