Car manufacturers including Fiat, Hyundai, and Volvo are announcing substantial discounts on electric vehicles while awaiting the UK government's new Electric Car Grant (ECG). Recently unveiled, this initiative aims to boost electric vehicle sales, which have stagnated since the cancellation of the previous Plug-in Car Grant in 2022. With a total of £650 million in funding, the ECG will offer discounts of either £1500 or £3750, depending on emissions criteria. To be eligible, automakers must comply with strict emissions standards and price their cars below £37,000. Current discounts include £1500 off Fiat models and up to £3750 off from Great Wall Motor for the Ora 03 hatchback.

The introduction of the Electric Car Grant signifies a renewed push for electric vehicle adoption in the UK. However, the eligibility criteria may favor domestic manufacturers over imported vehicles, particularly those produced in Asian markets. Such a situation could lead to an unintentional bias, making the landscape for electric cars more challenging for companies like Hyundai and MG, which have already begun offering their own discounts.
