Australia is on track to become the first customer for a Japanese-built warship since before World War II. Reports indicate that the Royal Australian Navy is preparing to acquire up to 11 enhanced FFM version of the Mogami-class frigates. This decision follows the RAN’s Surface Combatant Fleet Review, which suggested an urgent need for new warships to replace the outdated ANZAC-class vessels, in service since the mid-1990s. Though earlier hopes centered on a Type 31 frigate from the UK, the Mogami-class has emerged as the preferred option, particularly following discussions during a National Security Committee meeting. The first three ships will be constructed overseas, with the remainder built in Western Australia and the first delivery expected by late 2029.
