New satellite images analyzed by Radio Svoboda and Yandex show the area around Vladimir Putin's Valdai residence now includes 12 air defense positions, mostly Pantsir-S1 systems mounted on elevated towers. This is a marked increase from two sites reported in 2023–2024. Journalists also counted about 60 air defense positions in Moscow and the surrounding region.

The first Pantsir-S1 near the Valdai residence was spotted in January 2023, and a second was identified in July 2024. OSINT analysts have described the fortifications as reminiscent of Flaktürme, the World War II anti-aircraft towers used by Nazi Germany.

The expansion signals more than a security upgrade. It sends a public message about power and proximity to the leadership. By placing towers on a private residence's flank, authorities blend security with symbolism, turning space into a statement.
