The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified a new COVID variant known as Stratus, officially named XFG. Initially detected in Southeast Asia in January, Stratus accounted for 0% of cases in the U.S. but rose to about 14% by the end of June. The World Health Organization has placed XFG on its watchlist, categorizing it as a low health risk. Currently, the symptoms associated with this variant are similar to those of prior strains, including fever, cough, and now hoarseness among others. As of the end of July, COVID cases are on the rise in 40 states, signifying a summer surge typical of previous years. Dr. William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University notes that historically, COVID sees seasonal waves, with peaks expected in late summer.

The emergence of the Stratus variant highlights the ongoing evolution of COVID-19. Despite the WHO categorizing this variant as a low health risk, the increase in cases is concerning. This surge aligns with seasonal patterns of the virus, suggesting that public health messaging must adapt to educate people about current risks and symptoms, especially as the impending peak season approaches.
