Meta restructures AI division to push toward superintelligence

Meta has split its artificial intelligence work into four teams, research, training, products and infrastructure, with most division heads reporting to Alexandr Wang. Nat Friedman, an investor and former GitHub CEO, will head the product arm and report to Wang. TBD Lab and FAIR will take on expanded roles, while the AGI Foundations unit is dissolved and its members reassigned.

Meta says the changes are disruptive but needed to speed progress toward superintelligence. The reorg comes after other reorganizations and amid tensions between new high profile hires and existing researchers. Meta did not provide further comment.

The move centralizes control under Wang, potentially speeding decisions and product integration, but it could also limit the independence of research and inflame internal tensions among employees and high salaries.

The plan signals a bold bet on omni models and personal AI, yet it leaves questions about timing, budget, and governance. As rivals pursue fewer upheavals, Meta risks being seen as chaotic rather than capable unless results show up soon.
