About 5 million swimming pools connected to nine child deaths over two decades have been recalled by their manufacturers, as announced by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The pools, which are 48 inches tall or higher, have compression straps that act as footholds, enabling small children to enter the water unsupervised, even when a ladder is removed. The tragic incidents involved children aged between 22 months and three years, occurring in states including California and Texas from 2007 to 2022. In addition to the recalled pools, three other incidents were noted in which children accessed the pools using the compression straps. Major manufacturers such as Bestway and Intex Recreation Corp. sold these pools through various retailers, including Walmart and Target. Affected pool owners are encouraged to contact the manufacturers for a free repair kit that will replace the risk-prone straps with a safer alternative.
