Heretic and Hexen revived with remastered edition for PC and consoles

Nightdive Studios has released a remastered bundle for Heretic and Hexen, bringing the classic fantasy shooters to Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The package includes Heretic Shadow of the Serpent Riders, Hexen Beyond Heretic, and Hexen Deathkings of the Dark Citadel, plus two new episodes Faith Renewed and Vestiges of Grandeur. Players can join cross platform online co op and deathmatch for up to 16 players, with local split-screen for up to four players (eight on newer consoles and PC). The release also adds a vault of behind the scenes development material, a new audio track by Andrew Hulshult, and an option to switch between the original MIDI soundtrack and the new score.

Pricing is £13.49 or $14.99 and the bundle is available via Steam, GOG, Windows Store, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Switch supports 720p handheld and 1080p docked, while PS4 and Xbox One target 1080p60. PS4 Pro and Xbox One X can reach 4K60, and PS5 and Xbox Series X/S can deliver 4K60 or 4K120 on compatible hardware. PC performance depends on hardware. Nightdive has built a reputation for careful revival work, and this release follows that pattern.

Nightdive's approach fits a growing trend to honor old games while making them accessible to today’s players. The blend of faithful design with updated controls, online play, and extensive mods can attract new fans without erasing the originals. Yet the debate over how far a remaster should depart from the source remains a quiet but real tension.
