The Fever lose another key piece as injuries pile up, forcing roster changes and testing depth.

Fever's Sophie Cunningham to miss the rest of season due to injury

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Fever announced Sophie Cunningham will miss the rest of the 2025 season with a season ending injury. The team also confirmed Sydney Colson tore her left ACL and Aari McDonald broke a bone in her right foot during the Aug. 8 game against the Phoenix Mercury. To fill the gaps, Indiana signed guard Shey Peddy to a seven day hardship contract and released Kyra Lambert. Caitlin Clark has not played since July 15 and there is no timetable for her return.
Clark has missed a number of games due to multiple muscle injuries, and the Fever are 11-11 without her. Head coach Stephanie White said Clark is gradually building endurance but has not returned to practice. The Fever next host the Minnesota Lynx on Aug. 22 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Players stepping up under injuries

The injuries expose how fragile depth can be in a midseason stretch. With Cunningham out and Colson and McDonald sidelined, the Fever must rely on reserves and players developing for larger roles. The move to sign a veteran on a short term deal shows urgency, but it can undermine continuity by disrupting chemistry and development goals.
To stay competitive, the Fever need more than quick fixes. Health management, defensive schemes, and opportunities for younger players to grow will determine how far they can go this season. In a league that rewards depth, Indiana faces a clear test of organizational patience and planning over immediate reaction.
