Apple's iOS 26 adds Live Translation to FaceTime, translating captions in real time across English, French, German, Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish (Spain). The interface now centers on a card style view of contacts with full images and background video previews, and call controls move to the bottom right. A new New Call button and a filter menu streamline how users reach contacts.

Call screening and spam filtering are optional features. Missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers can be hidden in an Unknown Callers list. Spam calls are silenced and saved in a dedicated Spam list. Sensitive Content Blocking and Communication Safety use on-device machine learning to detect nudity and pause FaceTime when detected. These protections apply to accounts for young users and can be turned on by adults as needed. Apple says no data leaves the device for nudity alerts and that nudity detections are not shared with Apple.

The changes show Apple prioritizing safety alongside usability. Live Translation broadens FaceTime’s reach but depends on language packs and device capability, which can widen gaps for older hardware. The card based UI pushes users toward more intentional contact management, a shift that may feel more personal on smaller screens.

The opt-in model for call filtering and safety warnings gives users control, yet it also raises questions about who benefits most and who might be left unprotected if features are not enabled.
