Gaza Talks Advance as U S Envoy Meets Qatar Prime Minister in Spain

U S special envoy Steve Witkoff met in Spain with Qatar’s prime minister to discuss a joint Egyptian-Qatari proposal aimed at ending the war in Gaza and allowing aid into the territory. The talks focus on making a hostage return framework workable, with reports that all hostages could be released at once in exchange for a halt to fighting and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. Of the 251 people seized by Hamas on Oct 7, 2023, about 50 remain in captivity, with roughly 20 believed alive in Gaza.

Earlier Witkoff visited a privately run aid distribution site in southern Gaza and spoke with families of Israeli hostages in Tel Aviv. The meeting comes amid widespread international condemnation of Israel’s plan to take Gaza City by force. Netanyahu has said the Security Cabinet approved the operation, while Israel’s military says it will protect civilians and provide aid from safe zones. In parallel, a U N Security Council emergency session was planned and several allies urged restraint, warning the move could worsen the humanitarian crisis and risk more displacement.
