Denmark has finalized a deal to purchase four MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones from General Atomics to strengthen its surveillance capabilities in the Arctic. The agreement, made with NATO’s Support and Procurement Agency, was announced on July 22. The drones are expected to be delivered between 2028 and 2029, pending a full certification process for operation in national and international airspace. DALO, the Danish Defense Acquisition and Logistics Organization, did not disclose the contract value but highlighted that the drones will support missions in the Arctic, North Atlantic, and Baltic Sea regions. This move comes as Russia increases its activity in the Arctic, making surveillance a priority for NATO member states. However, operating drones in such extreme conditions presents challenges, including battery performance and GPS signal quality. According to General Atomics, the MQ-9B drones are equipped to handle these conditions reliably.
