OpenAI has eliminated the option for users to make their ChatGPT conversations publicly searchable after discovering that people were unintentionally sharing sensitive information. This change, confirmed on August 1, comes in response to feedback that the feature led to unwanted exposure of private chats on search engines like Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo. The option to make chat links discoverable was introduced in May 2023, initially aimed at simplifying conversation sharing. However, many users mistakenly thought this feature was mandatory. OpenAI’s Chief Information Security Officer, Dan Stuckey, stated that the feature introduced too many risks, leading to the decision to remove it entirely. While OpenAI has stopped chat indexing on Google, conversations may still appear on other search engines during the rollout of this update.
