Bugonia earns near seven-minute ovation at Venice premiere
Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone unveiled Bugonia at the Venice Film Festival as part of the main competition. The world premiere inside the Sala Grande drew a six minute fifty second ovation as Lanthimos and the cast bowed, and the audience continued to applaud during the bow line. The film is a remake of Jang Joon-hwan's Save the Green Planet!, and follows two conspiracy obsessed men who kidnap Stone's high powered CEO, convinced she is an alien intent on destroying Earth. The cast also includes Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone.
Stone spoke of the collaboration, saying she loves working with Lanthimos and the material he draws to. Lanthimos described the movie as a reflection on what is happening now in society, with technology, artificial intelligence, wars and climate change pressing on the public imagination. Focus Features will release Bugonia in a limited engagement starting October 24, followed by a wide release on October 31. The project is produced by Element Pictures and others and marks another high profile collaboration between Stone and Lanthimos after Poor Things.
